What is ISI Mark Certification?

ISI mark, or the Indian Standards Institute is a very important industry standard in India. This mark confirms that the certified products conforms to the government acknowledged Indian Standards and is developed as per the standards of Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS). Many of our everyday electrical appliances and kitchen accessories and appliances are ISI certified and is considered a mandate in India. Though one can find many unauthorized and illegal usage of this certification mark in the market, it is considered a punishable offense and has severe penalties if found guilty.

Advantages of ISI Mark Certification

  • The first and the foremost advantage of this certification is the standardization of quality so as to be able to understand and distinguish the good products from low quality ones.
  • The quality of such certified products are set up to the standards set for the certification and hence undergoes a lot of quality check and investigation before reaching the consumers.
  • In the case of the product not meeting the standards of certification, the manufacturer becomes liable to replace the product with a one that does. This ensures that the buyers get quality for the price they pay.
  • The manufacturer can also be legally penalized or questioned in case of manufacturing low quality product or in case the product not meeting the certification standards.

Procedure involved

The process of applying and getting ISI certification involves the following steps:

  • Submission of application form duly filled along with the required supporting documents and the application fee (Rs 1000) to the branch office of the region where the manufacturing unit is located.
  • The application is scrutinized along with all the supporting documents submitted by the applicant. The application gets accepted and a number is allotted which is conveyed to the applicant for any future correspondence.
  • A preliminary investigation is carried out by the BIS officer within 15 days of submission of the application. The scrutiny date is mutually agreed upon by both the applicant and the BIS officer. This scrutiny is of technical nature and aims at ascertaining the quality and capability of the product manufacturer. The officer evaluates the manufacturer’s testing and research facility and ascertains the competency of the personnel involved in the manufacture of the product.
  • The product samples are taken at random and tested in BIS approved labs as part of quality check.
  • The BIS charges additional fees for the random and independent testing of product and for the preliminary scrutiny visits to the manufacturing facility on a man-day basis. Currently this is fixed at 7000/- plus tax per day.
  • The BIS grants the license after a thorough scrutiny and after a set of regular visits and facility capability checks it conducts. The manufacturer can display the ISI mark logo on the product only after the BIS approves of the quality and completes the scrutiny process. The manufacturer has to pay a marking fee to display the logo on its product and also should conform to the standard testing procedures as approved by the BIS.
  • Alternatively the manufacturer can also submit a self-evaluation or verification report for the product the application is submitted.
